Shepherd’s pie is a quintessential homey dish that is delicious anytime time of year but is particularly good on a cool fall or winter night. Ground lamb, or beef, cooked with onions and maybe some peas or carrots and drenched in a rich gravy. Then topped with a thick layer of creamy mashed potatoes and maybe a good covering of shredded cheese. You know it’s ready to come out of the oven when that gravy starts to bubble out and the top is golden brown.
While the name shepherd’s pie is more widely known, that is usually reserved for when it is made with ground lamb. If you are making shepherd’s pie with ground beef it is actually a cottage pie.
